Our Story

We built the patient financial platform that should have existed for decades.

The patient financial platform built to un-fuck the healthcare billing system.

The Problem Is Getting Worse. The Tools Are Finally Ready.

The healthcare system is designed to overcharge you. Billing errors are systematic, not random. 19% of in-network ACA marketplace claims were denied in 2023. Less than 1% of those were ever appealed. When patients do appeal? 50%+ succeed.

The system denies claims it knows are valid — because it knows most patients won't fight back. Hospitals have entire departments dedicated to maximizing what you pay. Insurers have denial engines built to outlast you. You had nothing. Until now.

Why a Logistics Executive Built a Tool to Fight Back

Scott Ruffin spent 20 years building operational systems at Amazon and Walmart — using data to find patterns and build automation around them. He founded Amazon Air. He scaled a logistics startup to $50M in revenue.

Then he got a medical bill. And started digging.

“Medical billing has more intentional friction than any supply chain I've ever touched. The complexity isn't a bug — it's a feature. Every layer of confusion between you and a correct bill generates revenue for someone. Denied claims that never get appealed. Duplicate charges that never get caught. Procedures billed separately that should be billed together.”

He built Kupu to be the patient's counter-system. The same analytical rigor applied to supply chain optimization — applied to the most broken consumer financial experience in America.

The Mission

Un-fuck the patient financial experience.

Not one piece of it — all of it. Billing errors, denied claims, deductible tracking, cash-pay pricing, appeals coaching. One app. Every healthcare dollar. Finally under your control.

We're on the patient's side. Every person should know if they're being overcharged. Every person should be able to fight back with the right documentation, the right language, and the right tools. The healthcare system wasn't built for you — Kupu was.
